Sandy Pawz Dog House November 2014 Newsletter
Lately I’ve been thinking about the tv show Cheers.  I really liked that show when it was on and I watched it every week.  The part I’ve been thinking about is when Norm Peterson would walk into the bar every week and everyone would yell “Norm!”.  I’ve realized, we do the same thing with our regular customers too, except it’s dogs, not people.  Here comes an excited Boston Terrier:  “Izzy!”  In walks a bouncing Goldendoodle: “Oliver!”  Here’s a happy Border Collie mix: “Enzo!”  There’s a tail wagging Akita mix: “Buster!”  and it goes on and on.  We’re always happy to have the opportunity to see and call out the names of our furry friends.  Do you remember?…”Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came…you wanna be where everybody knows your name.”  –Cheers
Tip of the Month
Did you know that almost all dogs contract roundworms at some point in their lives?  They usually get then as puppies, but they can get them as adults too, and most dogs don’t show any symptoms,  However,if there’s a serious infestation, symptoms could include vomitting, diarrhea, weight loss, dull hair, and a potbellied appearance.  The good news is some heartworm preventives can control roundworms.  Talk to you vet about what might work for you dog.
Pet of the Month
Thor Ferraras is a Shepherd/Husky mix who comes to us for daycare and is currently working with us to earn his Canine Good Citizen certificate. Thor loves to play with big dogs and little dogs.  His good friends in daycare include Rocky (a Boxer), Henry (a Maltipoo), Rusty (a Dachshund), Roxie (a Terrier mix), and Rocky (another Boxer).
Training Tip…”What Would Sandy Sandy?”
Did you work on teaching your dog to go to his/her spot?  Did you continue to ring the doorbell and knowck on the door to desensitize your dog to the sound?  Great!  Now we put them together.  Have a friend ring the doorbell or knock on the door and tell your dog “Go to your spot”.  If the dog does praise and treat.  If the dog doesn’t, lead him/her by the leash to the spot.  By now your dog should know what you want, but he/she may have trouble doing it when the bell rings or the door knocks.  This month practice the together.  It’s a little harder because it takes two people, but a coulple bell rings and door knocks a day should do it.  Call us if you have questions about this and watch for our next step in December.
Check It Out
While visiting Las Vegas in October, I had the opportunity to meet Seigfried Fischbacher from Seigfriend and Roy.  I was walking through the Seigfriend and Roy animal habitat at The Mirage and found myself standing next to him.  He was so nice and happy to shake hands and take pictures and have a quick conversation with anyone that approached him.  For this animal lover, it was a highlight of a great weekend.
