Sandy Pawz Dog House August 2015 Newsletter
Most people keep identification tags on their pet’s collar which is great.  Unfortunately, sometimes tags fall off.  It’s always a good idea to have a back-up plan.  These days microchipping is a great option.  Microchips are placed under the pet’s skin.  Most veterinarians and shelters have a hand held scanner so they can check for microchips.  Another option (although not as popular these days) is tattooing.  A tatto with a series of numbers that are registered with a national database can be put either on the pet’s inside flank or the ear.  One more option that is more high tech is to put a GPS device on your pet’s collar which will tell you the pet’s exact location.  I suggest using two options in case one doesn’t work.
Tip of the Month
Got fleas?  This time of year and in this kind of weather it’s a good possibility.  What can you do?  Treat the house for fleas: sweep and/or vacuum floors, wash any bedding your dog or cat has come in contact with, and treat upholstery.  Then you can either give the dog or cat a flea bath or have it professionally done.  Finally, you want to use a preventative flea treatment.  You can talk to your vet or give us a call if you have questions to help you decide what will work best for you.
Pet of the Month
Lady Liberty (Libby) is an English Bulldog that comes to us for grooming and boarding.  Libby seems to launch herself through the front door when she comes in and it’s a wonder we ever finish her bath as everyone must spend time hugging her.  She plays well in daycare but she seems to prefer the company of people and we are all happy to obey.
Training Tip…”What Would Sandy Say?”
Did you know that when potty training a puppy or dog, using potty pads in the house will confuse him/her and encourage him/her to go in the house?  The best thing you can do when potty training is get rid of the potty pads, establish a routine of feeding and taking the puppy or dog out regularly, and be as consistent as you can.  Be sure to praise whenever the puppy or dog goes in the correct spot and do not punish him/her for going in the wrong spot.  As always, if you have questions about potty training, give us a call at 760-739-7299.
