Sandy Pawz Dog House June 2014 Newsletter
May had some pretty scary days with the wild fires.  I remember during the last fires Steve and I were evacuated.  During the chaos it was so hard to find a place that would take us and our pets adding more stress to an already rough situation.  So when  the fires started this time we knew we wanted to help and offered free boarding for anyone evacuated that had no place to bring their dog.  We had several takers and were so proud to help even if just a little bit.  We hope you and your loved ones remain safe!!  Now that the fires are past us we can all just have a great summer!
Tip of the Month
Did you know that almost half of the pets in the U.S. are overweight?  Just like humans, this puts them at risk for heart problems, diabetes, joint problems, and many other health issues.  If your dog or cat is in the heftier 50%, there are things you can do to help whittle their waist.  First, feed a high quality pet food that has real meat as the first ingredient.  Second, save treats for training time.  Third, be sure that your pet gets some kind of physical activity every day.  If you’re following these guidelines and your pet is not sllimming down, it may be time to see your vet.

Training Tip…”What Would Sandy Say?”
Remember the game Follow the Leader?  You can use the principles of this game to help train your dog.  For example, whenever you and your dog go through a doorway together, you go first.  It helps the dog understand that you are the leader because in dog language, the leader always goes first.
